Officials say the city saw 25 murders in 2024, compared to 26 in 2023. That figure is still a sharp decline from the 2020 peak of 50 murders.
AKRON, Ohio — A new report shows the number of murders went down in the city of Akron in 2024 compared to 2023, but not by much.
The Akron Police Department reported a total of 25 murder victims in 2024, which was slightly lower than the 26 victims recorded the previous year. This marks a significant decrease from the higher numbers reported in 2022 with 43 murders and 2021 with 42.
Out of the 25 victims, five were identified as females. The majority of the victims, twenty-one in total, lost their lives due to gunshots, while three were fatally stabbed, and one victim suffered from blunt force trauma.
November stood out as the deadliest month in the city, with a total of five reported murders. In contrast, there were no reports of any murders in both January and September, according to the police department’s data.
There are nine cases still under investigation with no suspect information, including one from one of the most violent weekends in Akron’s history. Detectives are still searching for suspects in the mass shooting during a June 2 house party on Kelly Avenue. One person died and nearly 30 others were injured, and with still no suspects named more than six months later, the incident remains listed as unsolved and under investigation.
Akron’s murder rate peaked in 202, when police reported a total of 50 such homicides. The number of unsolved cases did decrease from 10 to nine in 2024, also down from 19 in 2021 and ’22.
The Akron Police Department’s data specifies incidents that were classified as aggravated murder, murder, and voluntary murder.
