Three people killed after driver speeds away from Weld County traffic stop, crashes head-on into other vehicle

GREELEY, Colo. — A man who was reportedly swinging a knife at passing cars was shot and killed by a Greeley police officer Wednesday afternoon.

The Greeley Police Department received multiple reports from the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) regarding a man who was spotted wielding a knife in the 500 block of 16th Avenue. The individual was last observed heading west towards 21st Avenue.

As per CIRT officials, an officer discovered the man at the 1900 block of 2nd Street, where he was seen aggressively swinging the knife at passing vehicles. Despite the officer’s instructions to drop the weapon, the man did not adhere to the commands.

According to the CIRT report, the man started approaching the officer swiftly, disregarding commands to stop, which led the officer to use their firearm.

Authorities performed life-saving measures on the man until medical personnel arrived and pronounced him dead around 2:25 p.m.

No officers or community members were injured in the incident.

The Weld County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once his next of kin have been notified. According to CIRT officials, the man was on parole.
