DeLAND, Fla. – Authorities in DeLand are on the lookout for a suspect involved in a shooting incident that occurred outside the same bar where a fatal shooting took place earlier this month, as reported by the police department.
The DeLand Police Department stated that Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert, aged 55, allegedly fired shots at another individual outside McCabe’s Bar on North Amelia Avenue following a disagreement over a drink.
Gilbert — who’s currently at large and believed to be driving a tan 1999 Nissan Quest — had never met the victim before that night, police said.
According to the police department’s news release, Gilbert purchased a $5 drink for the victim and then approached him outside the bar in the early hours of Saturday, demanding reimbursement. This request led to an altercation, resulting in Gilbert retrieving a handgun and shooting at the victim from a close distance of approximately three feet.
The victim ducked out of the way and was not struck by the bullet, the release states, adding the bullet wound up hitting an exterior cooler and penetrating the wall of the building, which was still occupied at the time.
Officers and deputies responded around 2:05 a.m., locating a single 9mm shell casing and observing physical damage to the scene consistent with a shooting, according to the release. Gilbert had run away before entering the van and leaving the scene northbound on North Amelia Avenue, police said.
The victim and bar staff helped identify Gilbert with a photo lineup, the release states. News 6 is working to learn more.
Anyone with information about Gilbert’s whereabouts is urged to not approach him and to instead contact the DeLand Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
It was at McCabe’s bar where on May 3, 24-year-old Avantae Williams was accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Keshod Harris.
News 6 Reporter Jarell Baker interviewed Courtney Rickman, a bartender at McCabe’s who was shot in both hands during the incident and told us she was trying to break up a fight when it happened.
“It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever been through. It happened so fast that I didn’t really have time to get scared when it happened, but, it keeps coming back. It replays in your mind over and over,” Rickman said.
