Kjeldsen and González each carded 3-under 67s on Thursday, one shot better than the trio of Steven Alker, Stewart Cink, and Retief Goosen.
Sharing the lead after the first round of the Kaulig Companies Championship are Søren Kjeldsen from Denmark and Ricardo González from Argentina, both carding a 3-under 67 on Firestone South. This event marks the third major of the year for the PGA Tour Champions.
Gonzalez opened with eight pars, took bogey on No. 18 and then played the front nine with five birdies to offset one bogey
Stewart Cink, a runner-up to Tiger Woods in a playoff at Firestone during a World Golf Championship in 2006, looked poised to take the lead before stumbling with two bogeys in his closing three holes.
He was at 68 along with Retief Goosen and Steven Alker.
Ángel Cabrera, who already has captured two majors at the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional, opened with a 71.
The winner of the tournaments earns a spot in The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass next year.
Firestone South, previously the venue for the World Series of Golf and a World Golf Championship, provides a tough challenge for the players, who will soon head to the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado.
