Special tribute at ICON Park in Orlando to honor Sen. Geraldine Thompson

Orlando’s ICON Park is set to honor the late Sen. Geraldine Thompson by lighting 30 palm trees in her favorite colors, pink and green, on Feb. 20 and 21.

The tribute recognizes Thompson’s dedication to Central Florida and her lifelong involvement with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, whose official colors are pink and green.

Sen. Thompson, who died at 76 due to complications from knee replacement surgery, was a well-known advocate for the Orlando Entertainment District and a strong supporter of tourism. She played a key role in bringing major events to ICON Park and supported attractions like the Blue Man Group. Her efforts also extended to cultural preservation, as she helped establish the Wells’ Built Museum of African American History and Culture in Orlando.

“Senator Thompson represented our district and was a friend to our industry,” said CEO and president of ICON Park Chris Jaskiewicz. “We will miss our friend and Senator.”

Thompson’s career spanned nearly two decades in the Florida House and Senate, where she represented West Orange County. She was instrumental in advocating for public education, voting rights, and public health. Her legislative achievements include strengthening safety standards for amusement rides and requiring the instruction of Black history in schools.

The community will have the opportunity to pay their respects at a public viewing on Feb. 27 at Majestic Life Church, followed by a Homegoing Service on Feb. 28. Women attending the service are asked to wear scarves in her honor.

State Rep. LaVon Bracy Davis, a close family friend, shared her personal connection to Thompson, highlighting the deep bond their families shared. “Senator Thompson wasn’t just a colleague; she was family,” Bracy Davis wrote.
