WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would immediately terminate the Secret Service protection details assigned to Democrat Joe Biden’s adult children. This protection detail had been extended by the former president until July, just before he left office in January.
In a social media post, the Republican president expressed his objection to the 18 agents assigned to Hunter Biden’s protective detail in South Africa this week. He highlighted that Ashley Biden also had 13 agents assigned to her detail and stated that she would also be removed from the list.
There was no immediate reaction from the former president’s office.
While former presidents and their spouses are entitled to lifelong Secret Service protection by federal law, the protection provided to their immediate family members above the age of 16 ceases once they leave office. However, both Trump and Biden had extended this protection for their children by six months prior to leaving office.
While touring the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Monday afternoon, a reporter asked Trump if he would revoke the protection for the former president’s son.
“Well, we have done that with many. I would say if there are 18 with Hunter Biden, that will be something I’ll look at this afternoon,” Trump said, who added this was the first time he heard about the matter.
“I’m going to take a look at that,” he said.
