A shooting close to an RTD station in Greenwood Village resulted in nearby schools holding students inside their classrooms past normal hours while authorities looked into the situation. The incident, which occurred around 3:12 p.m. on Tuesday, left at least two individuals wounded.
Cherry Creek High School, Campus Middle School, and Belleview Elementary were placed on a secure status following the shooting near the Dayton RTD Light Rail station. When under this status, students and faculty are required to move indoors, lock all doors, and no one is permitted to enter or exit without permission from the police or the district.
During the incident, students at Cherry Creek High School and Campus Middle School were held in class and initially not allowed to leave to be picked up by their parents, as stated by Cherry Creek School District spokesperson Lauren Snell. Later on, the district implemented a controlled release procedure, meaning parents had to communicate with school staff first in order for their children to be released.
Snell reassured Denver7 that all students and staff were safe.
