CASE DETAILS

Law enforcement officials from the Cleveland Division of Police were notified of gunshots through a ShotSpotter alert on February 7th at approximately 7:51 p.m. The alert originated from the 3900 block of East 147th Street.

Prosecutors say a car driven by a 35-year-old man was backing out of his driveway near East 147th and Edgewood Avenue. A 36-year-old woman was in the passenger seat, while Kaden was in the back seat.

“Jeffrey Grant and an unknown male drove to the residence in a rental car and approached the vehicle. They shot the vehicle multiple times and then fled the scene. One of the bullets struck Kaden Coleman in the head,” prosecutors noted.

Cleveland officers were then notified that a gunshot victim was being taken to the city’s Fourth District police station by private auto. From there, Kaden was taken by Cleveland EMS to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

Kaden was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. the following morning.

On Feb. 10, police executed a search warrant at a home in Maple Heights. Investigators discovered a drug lab in the basement with “large amounts of drugs” including over 550 grams of cocaine. Both Jeffrey Grant and Lanaemarshe Grant were present and arrested.

“Surveillance footage, clothing, and the rental car linked Jeffrey Grant and Lanaemarshe Grant to the homicide,” prosecutors added.

Cleveland police detectives say they are looking for an additional suspect who investigators believe was involved in Kaden’s murder. If you have any information on this case, please contact the Cleveland Division of Police’s Homicide Unit at 216-623-5464.

Also, Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the second suspect involved in the homicide. Anonymous tip information can be submitted by calling the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 216-252-7463, via the website at www.25crime.com, or from the Crime Stoppers mobile app.

“This week, four people were sentenced for killing a 3-year-old, and now, two people have been charged for killing a 10-year-old,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley in a statement. “Luis Diaz and Kaden Coleman deserved to live a full life. Gun violence is destroying lives and families throughout this community.”

At a Town Hall hosted by Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb on Wednesday night, the murder of Kaden was spotlighted when 10-year old Lorenzo Roberson gave a powerful speech asking the adults in the room if he too would have to be worried about his life being cut short.

“I am Kaden because his spirit now lives within me,” Lorenzo said. “I am Kaden because I am 10 years old, too. I get good grades, too. I respect my family, my teachers and myself. I’m Kaden because I believe in myself. Will I have a chance to survive? Will my life be cut short, too? All we want is hot food, something to do after school and to be safe in our community. You tell me, will the adults in this room make sure that I have a chance to grow? I am Kaden. His life is within me. I am Kaden. He lives within me.”
