VENICE – Venice has implemented an arrivals tax on day-trippers for the second year, beginning on Friday. This measure aims to address the issue of overtourism, which officials believe is endangering the city’s UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status.
Despite the introduction of the tax, a UNESCO committee decided not to list Venice as a cultural heritage site at risk. Critics of the day-tripper fee argue that it has not succeeded in dissuading visitors from coming to the city.
Here’s a look at Venice’s battle with overtourism by the numbers:
5-10 euros (about $6-$11)
The tax applies to day-trippers who do not stay overnight in Venice and wish to access its historic center. During the second year of this tax, visitors who obtain a QR code at least three days prior will be charged 5 euros, the same amount as in the initial pilot program. However, those who decide to visit on short notice will have to pay double the fee. The QR code must be acquired between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will be verified at entry checkpoints such as the Santa Lucia train station, the Piazzale Roma bus terminal, and in the vicinity of St. Mark’s Square.

The number of days this year that day visitors to Venice will be charged a fee to enter the historic center. They include mostly weekends and holidays from April 18 to July 27. That is up from 29 last year. The new calendar covers entire weeks over key holidays and extends the weekend period to include Fridays.

The city’s top budget official, Michele Zuin, said last year the running costs for the new system ran to 2.7 million euros, overshooting the total fees collected. This year, Zuin projects a surplus of about 1 million euros to 1.5 million euros, which will be used to offset the cost of trash collection and other services for residents.
