ORLANDO, Fla. – A lazy Sunday wasn’t in the cards for a group of volunteers in the Parramore neighborhood this morning.

Volunteers came out for the City District’s Second Annual Earth Day cleanup on Sunday.

The cleanup began at Inter&Co stadium, where volunteers received a vest, trash bags, and other tools to assist them in collecting litter in the nearby area.

“We’re all taking care of our city, it’s just great,” said volunteer Amanda Ferguson.

Ferguson brought her family out to the cleanup day and said it’s important for them to volunteer as a family.

“As parents, it’s crucial for us to involve our children, to educate them about the fact that there is only one Earth, and it is our collective responsibility to safeguard it by each doing our part,” Ferguson expressed.

Shan Rose, the District 5 Commissioner, attended the cleanup on Sunday morning and mentioned that it provides people with the chance to participate in the ongoing efforts of the community.

“I hope that we clean up the community, but I also hope that we have fellowship and we get to know folks and we get to explore the community,” Rose said. “I hope that some of the participants come back and visit some of the businesses that are down here, whether they’re coming to grab something to eat or they’re coming to watch a good show. ”

Paul Klein is the member engagement coordinator for the City District and said several groups collaborated for this year’s event including Orlando City Soccer Club, Orlando Pride, the Parramore District, West Lakes District and District 5. He said this year’s clean up grew since last year, with more than 250 people signing up.

“Having that many people come out on their free time just shows a lot, that we have a lot of people that care about the community, just as much as we do, and wanting to give their time to help make the city beautiful,” Klein said.
