Yet another month with a cold start in Northeast Ohio.
CLEVELAND — June has been pretty status quo for how things are going this year: below-average temperatures and above-average rain.
We have not experienced a prolonged period of summer weather yet. However, that is expected to change later this month. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is currently operating 1.9 degrees below the average temperature.

The month began with a record-low temperature, as Hopkins recorded 40 degrees on the morning of the 1st. That day, the high temperature only reached 63 degrees, conditions that are more typical of the latter half of April.
The morning of the 2nd also posted temperatures in the 40s. There was nowhere to go but up from there!
On the 4th, temperatures rose to 88 degrees, marking the warmest day of the year. Despite the average high now reaching 80 degrees, June has seen only three days with temperatures in the 80s.
Rain has been feast or famine in some cases. Here’s a prime example: On June 14, Cleveland Hopkins had a whopping 1.6 inches of rain, but Akron-Canton Regional Airport only recorded a “trace.” That’s just over 40 miles as a plane flies separating localized flooding from dry skies.
Heavy downpours have been common, with some localized flooding concerns where rainfall rates have been really high. Hopkins has had 2.41 inches for the first half of the month, which fell over five days and is 0.51 inches above average.

Big changes are ahead again. It seems like our pattern recently has been to start the month cold and then try to pay catch up. We’ll likely succeed in changing things around this month — highs in the 90s will be heading our way next week for the hottest days so far this year!
