“Why Are Some Florida Firetrucks Using Blue Lights Now?”

ORLANDO, Fla. – A striking change in Florida law is lighting up the rear ends of some of the state’s largest firetrucks — literally.

Starting from July 1, 2024, a recent law was approved during the legislative session of that year. It now grants specific fire department vehicles the permission to exhibit blue lights at the rear of the vehicle. This marks a notable change from the previous rule which limited the use of blue lights to law enforcement and certain correctional vehicles only.

According to the new law, government-owned firetrucks that weigh over 24,000 pounds have been given the green light to utilize blue lighting at the back end of the vehicle. Nevertheless, this allowance is not automatic. Before installing the lights, each vehicle must first receive approval from the fire chief of the department.

The goal is to improve visibility and safety, especially during emergency responses in low-visibility conditions or on high-speed roadways.

This legislation is a response to the increasing realization that improved lighting on emergency vehicles plays a crucial role in averting accidents and offering a more visible indication to drivers as they approach emergency situations where crews are actively engaged.
