The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is looking into an incident where a window at a Mapleton Public Schools building was hit by a stray bullet in the aftermath of an armed carjacking on Tuesday. Fortunately, no one was hurt during this incident.
The carjacking occurred around 2 p.m. in the 7600 block of Navajo Street.
The sheriff’s office said several people — four juvenile males and an 18-year-old male — have been detained.
The victim of the carjacking was uninjured and providing information to detectives, the sheriff’s office said.
After the incident, the sheriff’s office said the suspects in the stolen car drove near the Global Campus, and a shot was fired.
The stray bullet struck a window at the Mapleton Arts Center, a building that was empty at the time of the shooting. Authorities are unsure of the target of the gunfire or the intended aim of the suspects involved.
Authorities have put the entire campus, which includes multiple school facilities, on lockdown as deputies continue investigating.
For parents, guardians, or family members trying to collect a student from the affected school, the sheriff’s office has advised reaching out to the school for information on the release process.
