Elyria police investigate Sunday morning shooting

The suspect was transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

ELYRIA, Ohio — An woman is in custody after an altercation led to shots being fired at an Elyria residence on Saturday morning, police say.

Police officers were called to the 400 block of East Avenue around 4:56 a.m. in response to a reported shooting. Upon reaching the scene, they discovered Kierra Armstrong, aged 32, alongside two other individuals inside the property.

Armstrong had suffered a grazing gunshot wound and was transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives were called to the residence to question the 27-year-old female resident and 24-year-old female visitor.

Subsequent investigation revealed that Armstrong had visited the residence earlier that night, around 3:27 a.m. Law enforcement had been called to the house during this initial visit due to a disturbance.

Responding officers determined that no crime had been committed at that time and transported Armstrong “elsewhere in the city.”

Armstrong then returned to the East Avenue residence armed with a handgun at approximately 4:56 a.m. and forced her way inside.

A physical struggle ensued between Armstrong and the 27-year-old resident resulting in a shot being fired.

After questioning Armstrong, Elyria detectives charged her with aggravated burglary and using weapons while intoxicated. The charges stem from her unauthorized entry into a house on East Avenue and creating a disturbance.

She is being held at the Lorain County Jail without bond until her initial appearance in Elyria Municipal Court.

Anyone with additional information related to this incident is asked to call Lead Detective Tony DeMarco at 440-326-1205 or by email at [email protected].
