PLAYER RATINGS: Bernardo Silva dazzles for Man City while Anthony Gordon has an off night at the Etihad - but he wasn't Newcastle's worst player on the night in FA Cup defeat

Manchester City brought Newcastle’s FA Cup journey to a crashing end as Pep Guardiola’s superstars dominated a 2-0 win at the Etihad.

City progress to a quarter-final clash against Coventry after the Championship side’s dramatic win over Wolves, while Newcastle are left to compete solely in the Premier League.

Bernardo Silva was twice on the scoresheet with two deflected efforts that Newcastle failed to mount a reply against.

Manchester City

Stefan Ortega 6

A spectator for the large part but made a big save in the first half from Isak. His distribution, however, was suspect.

Kyle Walker 6.5

Untroubled, especially given Newcastle played without wingers. Did not really have to get forward, either. An easy night.

Ruben Dias 6.5

Like his team-mates at the back, this was a relative stroll for the centre-half. Strong and imposing when he had to be.

Manuel Akanji 7

Isak attempted to get away on his shoulder once or twice, but he invariably recovered and was not overly exerted.

City defender Manuel Akanji looked comfortable throughout and was not overly exerted

Josko Gvardiol 6.5

Was tested by Murphy’s pace and intent but came out on top.

Mateo Kovacic 7.5

Seemed to have a monopoly on possession of the ball at one stage, and never once wasted it. Very easy, but he also made it look so.

Rodri 7.5

See Kovacic. It was all so simple for the Spaniard, who is just better than anyone he comes up against.

Phil Foden 8

Played from the right but found space in No.10 position and was a menace throughout. Some lovely touches and just about the game’s best player.

Bernardo Silva 7.5

Two goals, albeit both deflected, but he was rewarded for taking aim after Newcastle stood off and invited him to shoot. Plenty of classy involvements the goals apart.

Jeremy Doku 7

Was involved in most City offensives but decision-making still needs to be better. Does not convert on positions of promise.

Erling Haaland 6.5

There were probably goals to be had here but he rarely threatened, save for one run and shot that flew inches wide. More of a team display than individual show from the striker.

A routine night when Newcastle’s change of shape presented very few problems and Guardiola’s team teased passes around the park with comfort.

Newcastle United (5-3-2)

Martin Dubravka 6.5

Two good saves before half-time to keep the score down. Unfortunate in that both goals were deflected.

Jacob Murphy 6.5

Was the source of some threatening balls in behind City and, in a team lacking energy right now, his endeavour stands out.

Fabian Schar 5.5

Unfortunate to be booked for fair challenge on Haaland but was out of sorts in his use of the ball at times.

Jamaal Lascelles 5.5

A difficult night at times in which he was booked for a tug on Doku, who repeatedly tried to run the wrong side of the visiting skipper in the first half.

Sven Botman 5

Clearly still affected by a knee problem and, allied to physical issues, his decision-making has also gone awry. His header was the deflection for City’s second goal.

Dan Burn 5

Backed off too much in allowing Silva to shoot for first goal and his right leg deflected the ball over Dubravka.

Sean Longstaff 4.5

Playing with a foot problem and needs to come out of the team. Looks very short of confidence and energy.

Bruno Guimaraes 7

Tried to make things happen and was easily the pick of Newcastle’s midfield. At least played a couple of testing balls in behind.

Joe Willock 5

Does not look 100 per cent after achilles absence and was involved nowhere near enough as his team needs, for a player who can impact to great effect when fully fit.

Anthony Gordon 5

Joins up with England now and the only positive from this was that he avoided injury, given how little he was in the game.

Alexander Isak 5.5

Should have scored before the break when ball fell his way eight yards out but shot was saved. Same again in second half when hesitating after finding space in area. Another who does not look at his sharpest.

Subtitutions

Miguel Almiron (on 62 for Gordon) 5.5

Elliot Anderson (on 62 for Willock) 6.5

Manager – Eddie Howe 5

Set up with a back five for first time this season and was unfortunate in that both City goals were deflected, but his side did not do enough to trouble City at the other end.
