Man United 'want talks with Wolves boss Gary O'Neil over role in potential new coaching set-up at Old Trafford'... as Sir Jim Ratcliffe eyes shock swoop following the Englishman's impressive season at Molineux

Manchester United reportedly want to speak to Wolves manager Gary O’Neil about a potential coaching role at Old Trafford.

United’s new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to reshape the coaching structure at the club by building a team under a head coach rather than a manager.

And club chiefs have identified O’Neil as someone they would like to talk to about switching Molineux for Old Trafford, according to ESPN.

It is also unclear as to whether O’Neil would join Erik ten Hag in the dugout, with the Dutchman still facing an uncertain future.

United’s thrilling FA Cup win against Liverpool before the international break may have given Ten Hag some breathing space, but the club’s hierarchy are yet to make a final decision over whether he will still be at the club next season.

The 13-time Premier League champions have been linked with Gareth Southgate, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank, as Ratcliffe and co weigh up whether Ten Hag is the man to take the club forward.

The Red Devils want to shake up their coaching set-up this summer, and O’Neil could be part of the transformation.

O’Neil, 40, only took charge of Wolves just days before the start of the season, but has thrived in the Midlands, leading the club to ninth place in the Premier League.

They remain in the hunt for European qualification heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

O’Neil also previously impressed at Bournemouth, guiding them to safety last term after taking over the team following a 9-0 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season.

He has a three-year contract at Wolves, meaning United would likely need to pay compensation if they step up their interest.

If O’Neil does opt to join United, it would be another eye-catching move from Ratcliffe away from the pitch.

He has already enticed the highly-rated Omar Berrada away from Manchester City, and he is set to take over as CEO this summer.

United also want Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director, but are yet to agree a compensation fee with the Magpies. Ashworth was placed on gardening leave by Newcastle last month.
