MasterChef’s Julie Goodwin discusses her ten year mental health battle

MasterChef’s Julie Goodwin checked into a mental health facility for five weeks in February this year.  

And on Saturday, the celebrity cook got candid about her decade long struggle with her mental health. 

In an interview with the Gold Coast Bulletin, the 49-year-old explained that she was ‘really unwell’.

‘I could not find a single grain of energy or joy or anything. I was so worn down and I was physically really, really unwell,’ she said.  

‘(My body) went, “well, if you’re not going to listen to the brain, then let’s just send it to every other friggin’ organ in your body.”‘

It was then that her loving husband, Mick, took her to the hospital and that was when she new she needed to get some help.

In February this year, Julie checked into a mental health facility, and while she is doing well, she admits that she is still learning how to cope with her mental health struggles. 

However, she revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic may have been a blessing in disguise.    

She was forced to shut down her cooking school due to the lockdowns, and with so much free time on her hands she could focus on ‘the self care stuff I had been neglecting’.

Julie took up yoga, painting and swimming and is rediscovering the ‘happy moments’ in life. 

‘You’ve got to find the happy moments and create the moments, you know, and recognise the horrible ones when they’re there,’ she said. 

‘Try and let those thoughts go and create better thoughts, and you’ll have more and more of those good moments.’
