Bruno Guimaraes is unsure on what his future holds at Newcastle - with Eddie Howe's side set to offload a key player to satisfy Premier League spending rules... as Man City and PSG prepare to swoop on the £100m-rated star

Bruno Guimaraes admits he’s unsure what his future holds at Newcastle United and believes the club ‘made things happen too quickly’ as they struggle to maintain last season’s success.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has admitted the club may have to sell one of their best players this summer in a bid to satisfy Premier League spending rules and Brazil international talisman Guinmaraes could be one who makes way.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain both hold interest in Guimaraes and a £100million summer sale would go a long way to keep the books balanced.

‘I signed for the club and am happy for the club, we never know what is going to happen but for my part I am happy in the club,’ he told a press conference ahead of the Brazil game.

‘We are disappointed about the season but we still have a chance to finish at least seventh and finish in the Europa League or Conference League to put the club in Europe again.

‘About the club staff, I cannot speak too much. I don’t know what is going to happen in the future but I am so grateful for Newcastle and happy for the club.’

Newcastle enjoyed phenomenal success last season to finish in the top four and reach the Carabao Cup final – but it’s come at a cost.

The Saudi owners have pumped in their money and Newcastle announced losses of £73.4m for the year ending June 2023 and £150m over the last two.

A host of unsuccessful summer signings and a raft of injuries has not helped the current hangover that sees the club 10th in the Premier League.

Guimaraes, though, had a feeling it might be the case.

‘This is part of the process,’ he said. ‘When I signed for the club I knew this would happen. We made things happen too quickly.

‘In my two years in the club we’ve got to a final, which unfortunately we did not win, and then we got into the Champions League after 20 years which was massive for the club.

‘This season we have been struggling because of injuries and suspensions, I’ve never been at a club with these types of injuries. Some injuries have been very strange. This season has been tough for us. To be honest I am a little bit disappointed I knew this would happen.’

Guimaraes could go up against a Newcastle team-mate in Anthony Gordon on Saturday, who earned his first England call-up ahead of the friendly at Wembley.

There’s no one, says Guimaraes, whose earned it more than Gordon who has scored nine goals alongside six assists for Newcastle this campaign.

‘He has been amazing, he is so quick and when we get the ball to him we know he is going to do something special,’ said Guimaraes. ‘No one at the club deserves to be in the England squad more than him.

‘He has been unbelievable, always scoring and giving some assists. He is a lovely guy as well, I am very happy for him and hope he can get some minutes for England. For me to play against him will be massive for both of us and the club as well.’
