A tragic incident unfolded at an Austrian school, resulting in the loss of ten lives and numerous injuries. The event has been labeled one of the most devastating mass shootings in the nation’s history.
Authorities swiftly responded to reports of gunfire at BORG Dreierschuetzengasse high school in Graz. Special forces police were on the scene shortly before 10 am local time on Tuesday to address the unfolding crisis.
The individual responsible for the attack, reported to be a student who was allegedly a target of bullying, ended his own life after perpetrating the violence. The assailant fired upon two classrooms before taking his own life in a restroom.
In chilling videos emerging online, the sound of gunshots rings out around the school campus, while others show bodies lined up on stretchers.Â
Pupils can also be seen running for their lives from the school as heavily armed cops scour the corridors.Â
Several students and at least one adult were among the dead, Graz Mayor Elkhe Khar said, and at least 28 people have been wounded.Â
Cops also confirmed that the school has now been secured and there is no further danger.Â
Police, who evacuated the building this morning, deployed their specialist Cobra tactical unit, which handles attacks and hostage situations.Â

Some 158 paramedics were at the scene today, while another 31 crisis intervention staff and 65 emergency vehicles were operating.Â
Students who managed to escape the violent rampage have been reunited with their parents.Â
Those injured are said to be receiving treatment in the Helmut List hall – an events venue close to the school, while a disaster alert has been issued for local hospitals.Â
According to news outlet Krone, two hospital wards are over capacity following the shooting.Â
Other images and videos show paramedics and police arriving at the scene, while another clip shows a helicopter flying over the area.Â
Newspaper Krone spoke to a teacher at the school who described being barricaded inside a classroom with students after hearing gunshots.Â
The Austrian government has also reacted to the shooting, with Chancellor Christian Stocker cancelling his appointments for the day.Â
The interior and education ministers are understood to be on their way to Graz.
Mayor Kahr called the incident ‘a terrible tragedy’.Â
‘All emergency organisations are acting with caution.Â

EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas declared herself ‘deeply shocked’ Tuesday by reports of the shooting.
‘Every child should feel safe at school and be able to learn free from fear and violence,’ Kallas posted on X.Â
‘My thoughts are with the victims, their families and the Austrian people in this dark moment.’
 School shootings are much more rare in Europe than in the United States but in recent years Europe has been shaken by attacks at schools and universities, that were not connected to terrorism.Â
Graz is the second largest city in Austria with a and is located in the southeast of the country.
The crime occurred shortly before the tenth anniversary of the Graz rampage on June 20, 2015, which left three people dead and which many Graz residents still remember today.Â
Attacks in public are rare in the Alpine nation of almost 9.2 million people. It ranks among the ten safest countries in the world, according to the Global Peace Index.Â
