A SEVEN-year-old girl has died and seven more injured after a teen went on a bloody knife rampage at an elementary school in Croatia.
The horror attack took place shortly before 10am on Friday in the Precko neighborhood of capital Zagreb.
Video footage published by Croatian media showed children, aged between five and 11, running away from the school building.
Meanwhile, frantic parents were waiting anxiously at the school gates to see if their children were safe.
One desperate mum told local outlet Jutarnji that she is still waiting to find her her child, who is in first grade.
She claims that no one is telling her anything, that the other children have gone home, but her child is still missing.
Police described the attacker as a 19-year-old “young male” and said he had been detained.
It has not yet been confirmed if the attacker is a student at the school.
Health Minister Irena Hrstić confirmed that one child has died, Dnevnik.hr reports.
Students and teachers who were injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.
One teacher – who was reportedly about to retire – is currently fighting for her life after being rushed to hospital in critical condition.
At least six ambulances were spotted at the site and a helicopter was also seen landing on the school playground to help emergency services.
It is the first school murder in Croatia in 52 years.
Discussing the tragic attack, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković expressed his dismay, stating: “We, along with the entire Croatian population, are shocked by the terrible event that took place this morning at Prečko Elementary School in Zagreb.”
“We also express our regret and sympathy to the families of the injured children at the Prečko Elementary School.”
The principal of the elementary school, in a distressed state, commented: “We are not okay, and we cannot be okay. At this moment, we are not in a position to provide any statements. We kindly ask for your understanding during this difficult time.”
