A woman who tragically died after being set on fire in a horrific incident on the New York subway has been identified by authorities as Debrina Kawam, aged 61 and hailing from Toms River, New Jersey.
The victim succumbed to her severe injuries following the brutal attack that took place on December 22 in a train carriage.
An individual named Sebastian Zapeta, aged 33 and identified as an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala who had been deported from the United States before, has been formally charged in connection with the murder.
He faces one count of murder in the first degree, three counts of murder in the second degree, and one count of arson.
The horrific crime, which was filmed by a passer-by, took place on an F train in Brooklyn.
Kawam’s body was so badly burned that police took over a week to identify her remains.
Her reasons for traveling from Toms River, a small township on the Jersey Shore, are still being investigated by the NYPD.
