Heuermann is facing charges for the murder of Valerie Mack, a 24-year-old from New Jersey whose remains were discovered in Manorville, New York in 2020. He is scheduled to appear in court on Long Island on Tuesday to address this new accusation according to CBS News.
Initially, Mack’s partial skeletal remains were found in 2000, approximately 50 miles away from where more of her remains were later located at Gilgo Beach over ten years later. It wasn’t until 2020 that DNA testing confirmed her identity.
According to a bail application related to the recent indictment, authorities found Mack’s remains tied up with rope inside a black plastic bag sealed with duct tape. The document also mentioned that both of her hands had been cut off and one of her legs was amputated.
“[Maxk’s parents] are very grateful for the small bit of closure,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said Tuesday, according to ABC News.
Heuermann also faces charges for the murders of six other women whose remains were discovered on Long Island.
The investigation into the Gilgo Beach killings began in 2010 when police searching for a missing woman uncovered 10 sets of human remains in the brush along a barrier island parkway, raising concerns about a serial killer.
Heuermann, who lived with his wife and two children in Massapequa Park while commuting to a Manhattan architecture office, was arrested on July 13, 2023.
Authorities discovered her remains tied with rope inside a black plastic bag and secured with duct tape, as stated in a bail application linked to the new indictment. The document indicated that both of her hands were severed, and one of her legs was amputated.
He’s also facing charges for the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, and Melissa Barthelemy. Earlier this year, investigators charged him with the deaths of three additional women: Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, and Jessica Taylor.
