A Florida man has been charged with kidnapping after he carjacked a woman who had struck him on his bicycle.
Danny Keith Phelps, aged 67, faced charges of kidnapping/false imprisonment, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as well as tampering with a witness according to the authorities of the Lake City Police Department.
Police officers responded to a report from a woman at a Lake City pharmacy on a Thursday afternoon. She recounted a strange incident where she encountered a bicyclist attempting to cross a street at the West Highway 80 intersection. The woman stated that she gestured for the man to proceed, but as she started to move, he suddenly darted in front of her vehicle and was struck.
The victim described how she exited her car to check on the man and alert emergency services, but he forcibly knocked her phone away and made menacing threats. Following this, he demanded that she enter her vehicle, loaded his bicycle into the back, and seated himself in the passenger side. It was at this point, as per her account, that he brandished a knife and instructed her to drive to a specified destination.
Once there, he got out, and the victim returned to the pharmacy, where she worked. Police did not say if he took his bicycle.
Lake City Police did not say how, but they identified the suspect and arrested him.
