Amanda Seyfried, the Oscar-nominated actress recognized for her work in Mamma Mia! and The Dropout, has again brought attention to her challenging audition experience for the highly awaited movie adaptation of Wicked.

During a frank conversation on Backstage’s In the Envelope podcast, Seyfried discussed how she managed these auditions while working on The Dropout, where she portrayed Elizabeth Holmes—a portrayal that earned her an Emmy. Her commitment to the audition process for Wicked emphasizes the intense competition in the entertainment industry and her unwavering commitment to her artistic development.

The Six-Audition Marathon for Glinda

Seyfried’s journey to play Glinda was anything but easy. She auditioned six times, refining her vocal performance and even recording a rendition of Popular for director Jon M. Chu.

“I auditioned like six times for Wicked because that had to be really just right,” Seyfried admitted. “I barely had time to do it, but I made it work. I worked my ass off for years and years on that music.”.

Her preparation included hiring a vocal coach to master Glinda’s operatic soprano range—a stark contrast to her previous musical roles. Despite the emotional and physical toll, Seyfried described the experience as “exhausting but exhilarating”, proving her commitment to the craft .

Balancing The Dropout and Wicked Auditions

At the height of her The Dropout filming schedule, Seyfried was juggling intense acting demands with weekend Wicked auditions.

“I literally bent over backwards while playing the hardest role of my life,” she recalled. “But I think it also taught me how far I’ve come as a singer, which I really wanted to prove.”.

Her ability to switch between embodying Elizabeth Holmes and performing Wicked’s demanding musical numbers showcased her versatility—though the role ultimately went to Grande, who also underwent a rigorous audition process .

A Transformative Experience, Even Without the Role

Though Seyfried didn’t secure the part, she walked away with newfound vocal confidence. One standout moment was singing alongside Cynthia Erivo (who plays Elphaba) during a callback.

“That was a moment in itself,” Seyfried reflected. “I’ve never felt that solid in my voice than I did at the auditions. And that’s kind of what I got out of it.”.

She remains philosophical about the outcome, stating, “Everything happens for a reason,” and even revealed her family still sings Defying Gravity at home .
