19-Year-Old Woman Charged With Trying to Kill Parents in ‘Resurrection Day’ Argument

A 19-year-old Washington state woman has been charged with the attempted murder of her parents in an argument at their home on Sunday.

According to police reports, an officer was summoned to the Vancouver residence of McKenzy Hafer, who resided with her parents and brother, shortly after 5:30 p.m. The call was made by her mother, Erin Hetzler, who informed 911 that the teenager had stabbed her father and attempted to harm herself by cutting her throat, as reported by KOIN.

Police found Hafer outside the home and took her into custody.

It all started when her father, Benjamin Hafer, wished McKenzy a “happy resurrection day,” to which she responded by stating she did not believe in God, sparking a disagreement, according to court documents. Eventually, they exchanged the greeting and both retreated to separate rooms to cool off.

At a later point, Hetzler confronted McKenzy while she was in the midst of cooking, which reignited the dispute between the mother and daughter, leading to Hafer throwing her phone in frustration.

That brought Benjamin Hafer into the kitchen to asked about the phone, prompting his daughter to grab a knife and stab him above the belly button “with the intent to kill him,” according to the court documents.

Hetzler then began yelling at her daughter, who cut her mother’s throat with the same knife, also “with the intent to kill her,” the court documents said.

She was ordered held on a $500,000 bail, charged with two counts of attempted murder. Her arraignment is scheduled for May 5.
