REPRESENTATIVE Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been criticized for using a speech tactic that is popular with fellow liberal Kamala Harris at a recent rally.
The firebrand Democrat appeared to make a desperate appeal to working-class voters while taking the stage with Senator Bernie Sanders in Idaho.
The progressive congresswoman stunned a packed Idaho crowd as she switched up her tone mid-speech, raising eyebrows and sparking a frenzy online.
AOC was talking normally when she suddenly changed her accent while slamming President Trump.
“This is a matter of fact. Donald Trump is a criminal. He was found guilty of 34 felony counts of fraud, found liable for sexual abuse, and if he wants to find the rapists and criminals in this country, he should look in the mirror,” she said to the large crowd.
She accused President Trump of “lying, abusing, and manipulating the stock market too.”
AOC’s quick accent switch caught on with many critics.
Republicans criticized her for what they described as a performative switch, accusing her of attempting to appeal to the 12,000-strong crowd at the Ford Idaho Center.
“AOC pulls from the Kamala Harris playbook,” a user posted on X.
“Debuts a brand-new accent during a rally last night as she weighs a potential 2028 Presidential campaign.”
“What happened to her voice?” wrote one.
“AOC accent is ridiculous. No one is buying what she is selling. She won’t get nominated for President,” said a user.
“AOC pulled out a new accent. She’s definitely running in 2028. No doubt in my mind,” added another.
“Oh look, AOC is doing the interchangeable accents to fit the demographic she’s in front of. Did she take notes from Kamala?” one user wrote.
“So she’s Kamala 2.0 she’s a Bronx girl, if there’s any accent is the Jenny from the Block accent,” said another user.
“AOC is so fake!! Cringe!! Democrats are never winning another election. Without saying Trump, Elon or Republicans…what is the Democrat’s message?” said one.
“AOC hit 4 different accents in 24 seconds,” one more user added.
The speech took place during a stop on her and Sanders’ barnstorming “Fighting Oligarchy” tour through Republican-heavy states.
PAST ACCENT ROW
Last year in August AOC was again mocked for making a similar change.
While addressing to the crowd in Chicago, Illinois, for about seven minutes during a speech at the Democratic National Convention, social media users pointed out a shift in her tone claiming she altered her accent to sound more down-to-earth and relatable.
Republicans at the time accused her of putting on a performance rather than delivering an authentic message.
The backlash mirrored the reaction she’s getting now, with many calling her delivery forced and insincere.
“The fake accent was way too much for me,” one person commented at that time.
“AOC busted out her fake accent tonight…” they wrote.
Who is AOC?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become a global face for the left wing in American politics.
Ocasio-Cortez, more commonly known as AOC, has been a House Representative for New York’s 14th district since 2019.
She is a part of the so-called “Squad,” which is an informal group of nine Democratic politicians known for being more progressive.
AOC was born in The Bronx, New York City, and still serves part of the borough.
She graduated from Boston College in 2011 with a degree in international relations and economics.
AOC infamously took a job as a bartender after college, which she has since had to defend.
She started her political career as an organizer for Bernie Sanders during the 2016 primary.
AOC SLAMS GREENE
AOC, 35, has long been floated as a future Democratic presidential hopeful, with Sanders himself referring to her as his “daughter” during a stop in Utah.
But it’s the voice change and not the message that has the tongues wagging.
Former vice president Kamala Harris faced similar mockery on the 2020 trail, where she was accused of altering her delivery depending on the crowd.
At one point she drew backlash for using a preacher-like voice at a Pennsylvania church and an urban tone during a TV comedy skit.
Now according to the social media users AOC is following suit and that it signals a bigger move toward 2028.
The Yale Youth Poll recently places Harris as the Democratic frontrunner with 28 percent support.
AOC came in second at 21 percent.
On the same night as the accent controversy, AOC also went after GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene over questionable stock moves.
“We saw Marjorie Taylor Greene buy that dip,” she told the crowd.
“How much did you make off of people’s despair? Off that panic? Off that suffering?”
New filings show Greene purchased up to $315,000 in stock right around the time former President Trump posted, “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!”
His post came just before a market rebound, following a pause on new tariffs.
In the two days prior, US markets has been rocked, with the S&P 500 losing 5.97 percent, the Nasdaq dropping 5.82 percent, and the Dow falling 5.5 percent.
In all, $6.6 trillion vanished from US stock value.
Despite Idaho’s deep-red reputation, Trump won it 67 to 30, the Ford Idaho Center was filled to capacity.
Organizers were forced to shut the doors at 12,500 attendees, surpassing the number of registered Democrats in the county.
