A group of ten individuals, which included three brothers, has been convicted of the crime of murder. This ruling comes after a teenager was fatally stabbed in a collective assault that took place in a public park.
Today, in Brisbane’s Queensland Supreme Court, a total of 12 defendants awaited their sentences. They were all charged with the murder of Girum Mekonnen, following a trial conducted solely by a judge in November 2024.

During the trial, Prosecutor Nathan Crane informed Justice Lincoln Crowley that the 19-year-old victim lost his life near Zillmere park in the northern area of Brisbane on September 13, 2020.

“(Mekonnen) sustained a fatal wound to his abdomen which severed the most crucial vein in the human body. An individual had used a bladed weapon to penetrate 25 centimeters into the most vulnerable part of his body,” Crane recounted.

Crane explained that Mekonnen had been with a group of people consuming alcohol and playing cards at the park when the accused encircled the area where they were gathered, creating a barrier around them.

“They arrived. They produced weapons. They immediately started using the weapons,” he said.

Yohana Wal Wal today was found not guilty of murder and not guilty of 10 other charges related to assaults and wounding.

Malat Akoi Makuach, 25, was also found not guilty of murder and 10 other charges.

Each defendant said “no” when Justice Crowley asked if they had anything to say before being sentenced.

Justice Crowley said he intended to sentence the defendants on March 31.
