The detention of a 42-year-old man from India who is currently in critical condition in a hospital in Adelaide has captured significant attention worldwide.
Gaurav Kundi was hospitalised after becoming unresponsive during an arrest by South Australian police on Payneham Road last week.
Some Indian media outlets have described the Adelaide incident as “Australia’s George Floyd Moment”.
A petition from the Indian community is demanding an impartial inquiry into the apprehension, the temporary removal of the involved officer or officers pending the investigation’s results, and the sharing of any video from body cameras with the family and their legal advisors.
“Could they have avoided the incident itself, that is the big question which I am raising as a member of the Indian community,” Naladi said.
However, Stevens has said the public should await the outcome of the internal police inquiry.Â
“I want to assure individuals who are worried about the police handling a police investigation, this is a standard procedure that is followed in all regions of Australia,” stated Stevens.
Police Minister Stephen Mullighan acknowledged the Indian community’s concerns.Â
“We are really grateful for that correspondence because it really highlights to me just how impactful this incident has been broadly in the community,” Mullighan said.Â
“I don’t think it’s reasonable for anyone to be drawing any conclusions on this incident until we have the benefit of having the investigation being undertaken.”
Sections of the Australian-Indian community are demanding further action and are planning a protest for later next week.Â
