The man accused of killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare has pleaded not guilty to murder and terror charges in a state case that will run alongside his federal prosecution.
Luigi Mangione, 26, entered his plea while shackled in a Manhattan court. The Manhattan district attorney charged him last week with multiple counts of murder, including murder as an act of terrorism.
An Ivy-league graduate from a prominent Maryland family, Mangione appeared to have isolated himself from family and friends recently. Despite frequently posting online about his back pain struggles, he was not a UnitedHealthcare client. On the other hand, Brian Thompson, the victim, had been with UnitedHealth Group for two decades, eventually becoming the CEO of its insurance arm in 2021.
It also has sent shockwaves through the corporate world, rattling executives who say they have received a spike in threats.
