Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, mentioned that the US might give up on securing a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine if no advancements are made in the next few days. Despite ongoing efforts, the conflict has not shown signs of resolution.
During discussions in Paris, significant progress was made as US, Ukrainian, and European officials outlined potential measures for peace. A crucial meeting is scheduled for the following week in London, which could determine the future of US involvement according to Rubio.
In light of the slow progress, Rubio expressed doubts about the feasibility of a peace deal. He stated to the press before leaving, “We are now reaching a point where we need to decide whether this is even possible or not. Because if it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on.”
Last Sunday’s strike on Sumy, resulting in mass casualties, was the second large-scale missile attack to claim civilian lives in just over a week. Some 20 people, including nine children, died on April 4 as missiles struck Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih.
The US-Ukraine minerals agreement, which Ukrainian Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said she signed with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is expected to pave the way for significant investments, infrastructure modernization, and long-term cooperation.
