The authorities in Texas are on the lookout for a suspect accused of capital murder, who escaped by removing his ankle monitor and burning down the home of his relatives where he was staying, just before his trial was scheduled to start.
Trever McEuen, 32, has been added to the state’s most wanted list, and a reward for his recapture has reached $30,000, KDFW reported.
McEuen admitted to shooting his neighbor, Aaron Martinez, aged 35, on May 1, 2023, during his initial arrest following a SWAT standoff. He is facing charges of capital murder, as well as four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and murder.
His trial had been set to begin on May 5, but four days earlier, he cut of the ankle monitor and fled.
McEuen had been released twice before after posting $2 million bonds.
Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas since 2015, succeeding Rick Perry, has described the state’s bail system as flawed and dangerous. He has urgently called for immediate reforms to the bail system that need to be approved by the legislature during this session.
