A 24-year-old Mississippi babysitter received a life sentence for killing a 2-year-old boy in her care and seriously injuring his infant sister.
FOX 13 Memphis reported that Makallie Durham was sentenced to life without parole by Circuit Judge Michael P. Mills Jr. on Friday after she admitted to capital murder in the child’s death.
Durham intentionally struck the two victims on their faces or heads between September 9 and September 12, 2022, as previously covered by CrimeOnline. According to court documents, Durham assaulted the children over several days.
On September 13, 2022, around 9 p.m., medics responded to a residence in Corinth after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. Deputies who arrived at the scene discovered the 2-year-old boy with bruises and marks on his body. He was swiftly taken to the hospital by first responders but was tragically pronounced dead.
Responders also found the 11-month-old girl and believed she had suffered multiple injuries that have not been described publicly. The girl was also transported to the regional hospital before both victims were sent to a children’s hospital about 100 miles away in Memphis.
Police arrested Durham shortly after, according to the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office.
“She will not be eligible for parole or any other form of release from incarceration,” the First Circuit District Attorney’s Office said in a news release on Faxebook..
