Flood Warning in effect for portion of Cuyahoga County, US 422 now open again beyond I-271

ODOT said all lanes were blocked on 422 east of I-271. Solon police confirms the highway has since been reopened.

CLEVELAND — The National Weather Service says a Flood Warning remains in effect for Cuyahoga County until 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

The heavy rains impacted U.S. Route 422 in Solon, where police officials were asking drivers to avoid the highway for multiple hours.

All lanes on 422 east of I-271 were blocked according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Additionally, the ramps connecting I-271 and I-480 to US 422 were shut down. However, the Solon police have verified that the highway is now clear for travel.

The National Weather Service issued an alert at 9:26 p.m. stating that heavy rainfall caused by thunderstorms had been detected on Doppler radar. The NWS warned of ongoing flooding in the area and predicted that it would either continue or start imminently, with rainfall levels reaching between 2 to 3 inches.

While no additional rainfall is expected, the NWS says flooding impacts will continue.

Several areas are expected to be affected by the flooding, including Cleveland, Solon, Warrensville Heights, Macedonia, Highland Hills, Garfield Heights, Maple Heights, Brecksville, Bedford, Beachwood, Bedford Heights, Independence, Pepper Pike, Chagrin Falls, Northfield, Orange, Moreland Hills, Walton Hills, Valley View, and North Randall.

“Multiple rounds of rain and a few storms will stick around this evening,” says 3News Meteorologist Jessica Van Meter. “Heavy downpours could lead to some localized flooding very quickly. Soggy conditions will eventually taper off overnight.”

The 3News Weather Team is already looking ahead to next week and the possibility of some severe storms with another cold front that will approach northern Ohio on Tuesday.

“We’ll turn warm and humid out ahead of this front helping to fuel some storms later in the day. These storms look to carry a severe threat with them — so as a result we have a Weather Impact Alert Day for Tuesday as an early heads up,” Van Meter explained.
