A boy abducted by his non-custodial mom from Georgia seven years ago has been found in Colorado.
Abdul Aziz Khan, then 7, went missing on November 27, 2017. His mother, Rabia Khalid, aged 40, failed to appear for a custody hearing in Atlanta, WAGA reported.
Police say she fled with the boy and her husband, Elliot Blake Bourgeois, 42.
The case saw no developments until February 23 when deputies in Douglas County, Colorado responded to a reported burglary in progress at an uninhabited residence, as detailed by KDVR. Upon arrival, they encountered two adults leaving the property and two kids in a vehicle on the premises. Initially claiming association with a realtor, further investigation revealed the adults to be Khalid and Bourgeois. Notably, one of the children, now 14, was identified as the long-missing boy from Atlanta.
Expressing immense relief, Khan’s family released a statement acknowledging the joy of Aziz finally being located after years of absence. They extended their gratitude to everyone who supported them through the ordeal and specifically commended the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for their diligent efforts in resolving the case. The family requested privacy as they embark on the subsequent steps of reuniting and healing as a family.
Khalid and Bourgeois have been charged with second degree kidnapping, forgery, identity theft, providing false information to authorities, and trespassing. They’re being held on $1 million bonds. They’re due in court on March 27.
Both Khan and the other child were taken into protective custody, and a court will determine next steps for them. The other child, who is younger than the missing boy, was not identified.
