Chappell Roan Explores Country Roots with "The Giver"
  • Chappell Roan Explores Country Roots with The Giver Embracing Freedom.
  • Her country pivot is described as bold and scary but not a permanent genre switch.
  • The song draws inspiration from Big & Rich and reflects her Missouri upbringing.
  • Despite exploring country Roan remains committed to her pop music career.

In an interview, Chappell Roan talked about her latest single “The Giver” and how exploring country music has provided her with new creative opportunities compared to her usual pop music style.

During a recent episode of Amazon Music’s Country Heat Weekly podcast, the 27-year-old artist, best known for her song “Hot to Go!,” discussed her new track and her decision to venture into writing a country song with LGBTQ+ themes, deviating from the pop tunes of her first album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.”

“I can’t go around calling myself the Midwest princess and ignore country music, honestly,”

she explained to Sutton and Anderson.

She mentioned, “It’s the type of music you hear in everyday places like the grocery store or on public transportation… I had a strong desire to delve into country music, but I want to make it clear that this isn’t about simply changing genres for the sake of attention.”

she added.

“I’m not out to convince a country audience to listen to my music by luring them in with a country tune. That’s not my intention at all. I just think a lesbian country song is hilarious, so I wrote it.”

For Roan, “The Giver” isn’t an attempt to “invade” country music with her identity; it’s more about capturing the true spirit of the genre.

“I wrote this country song not to crash into country music, but to truly express what I believe the essence of country music is for me, which involves nostalgia, summertime fun, and the fiddle and banjo giving that country queen vibe,”

she explained.

“It brings me a type of freedom that pop music doesn’t.”

Chappell Roan described her shift towards country with “The Giver” as “bold and scary” in a sincere post about the song. Nevertheless, she assured fans that her roots in pop music remain intact, revealing that her next album will be in that genre.

The inspiration for her new single comes from country duo Big & Rich’s 2004 hit “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy),” reflecting her background in southwest Missouri where she grew up surrounded by Christian and country music.

Roan first performed “The Giver” on Saturday Night Live in November 2024. After being introduced by host John Mulaney, she took the stage in a pink and white gingham bralette, matching shorts, and cowboy boots, while her band and backup singers embraced a similar country-inspired aesthetic—marking her first step away from her usual drag-heavy performance style.
