Pope Francis continues to improve, but 'mild renal failure' returns: Vatican

Pope Francis is doing well in his treatment and has been getting better slowly over the past few days while he stays in the hospital recovering from double pneumonia, the Vatican reported on Sunday.

“The night was quiet; the Pope is resting,” the Vatican said in a statement.

The 88-year-old Francis was hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on February 14 after his bronchitis worsened following a week of illness. Initially, doctors identified a mix of viral, bacterial, and fungal infections in his respiratory tract, which then progressed to pneumonia affecting both lungs.

Canadian Cardinal Michael Czerny will preside over the Holy Year Mass on Sunday for the volunteers.

The pope has been using high flows of supplemental oxygen to help him breathe during the day and a noninvasive mechanical ventilation mask at night.
