Myanmar earthquake

A statement from the military-led government of the country reported that the death toll has reached 1644, with 3408 individuals injured and 139 people still unaccounted for. They mentioned that these numbers might increase as more detailed information is gathered.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said in a statement on Saturday night, “there is no information to suggest any Australians were affected” in either Myanmar or Thailand – the two worse impacted countries.

In response to the disaster, India has dispatched a search and rescue team, a medical team, and supplies to aid in the relief efforts. Additionally, Malaysia has announced plans to send 50 personnel to assist in identification and support operations in the most severely affected areas.

South Korea has pledged $US 2 million ($3.17 million) in humanitarian assistance for Myanmar through global organizations to help with the recovery process. The Foreign Ministry stated that they will be closely monitoring the situation and remain open to providing further assistance as required.

The United Nations allocated $US 5 million ($7.9 million) to start relief efforts.

President Donald Trump said on Friday that the US was going to help with the response, but some experts were concerned about this effort given his administration’s deep cuts in foreign assistance.

The Trump administration’s cuts to the United States Agency for International Development have already forced the United Nations and non-governmental organisation to cut many programs in Myanmar.
