A Virginia woman and her 8-month-old daughter who vanished in 2017 were murdered by the child’s father, police announced on Monday.
Keir Johnson, 34, and her daughter Chloe were reported missing when they did not show up for a gathering at Buckroe Beach. Subsequently, an AMBER Alert was issued for the 11-day-old infant. Despite the discovery of Johnson’s vehicle in Newport News two weeks after their disappearance, the AMBER Alert was later deactivated, and their current location remains unknown.
Newport News police Chief Steve Drew confirmed the arrest of the missing baby’s father, Carlos Johnson, 46, during a routine traffic stop. Carlos Johnson was apprehended in connection with the deaths of his ex-girlfriend and their daughter. Family members revealed that although Keir and Carlos Johnson were not married, they shared the same last name.
The sister also claimed Keir and Carlos Johnson were separated when she vanished with her daughter.
A search conducted by the police in a grassy area close to the trailer park where Keir Johnson’s vehicle was found yielded no significant clues, as reported by the Daily Press.
Carlos Johnson is charged with his ex-girlfriend and daughter’s first-degree murders even though their bodies were never discovered. A $35,000 reward for information in this case remains active.
“Even though someone has been arrested, the job is only beginning,” Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwyn told reporters on Monday. “Even though somebody has been arrested, we know that in the last seven years, there are people in this community who have information about this case that can help bring closure to a family that has suffered for seven years, almost eight.”
