The parent of a young child who was hit by a passing vehicle as he darted in front of it has been detained for acquiring a firearm and firing at the driver of the car.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver came to a halt after accidentally hitting the 2-year-old boy, who sustained critical injuries that proved fatal, as stated by KMPH. Family members confirmed that the child’s name is Benjamin Zepeda.
The occurrence unfolded on Highway 33 in Stanislaus County around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Elvis Zepeda and his son were standing on the side of the highway close to a food truck when the toddler dashed onto the road. Despite his father’s efforts to catch up to him, a car traveling northbound collided with the boy, prompting the driver to stop immediately.
Zepeda retrieved his handgun from his own car and started shooting, striking the vehicle but not the driver.
Zepeda was charged with attempted murder, possession of an illegal firearm, and possession of a controlled substance.
