Jenny Willford pullquote on sexual assault

DENVER โ€” A man who allegedly posed as a Lyft driver and sexually assaulted a Colorado lawmaker last year is now facing charges.

The 17th Judicial District Attorneyโ€™s Office recently announced a felony charge against 42-year-old Mukhammadali Mukadyrov. The charge stemmed from an incident where Mukadyrov allegedly assaulted Rep. Jenny Willford in Northglenn on February 24, 2024.

In announcing a lawsuit against the rideshare company earlier this year, Willford said she had ordered a Lyft after a night out with friends.

According to Willford, during the ride, the driver began asking personal questions such as her marital status. The situation quickly escalated as the driver made inappropriate comments about his intentions towards her. He suggested that her husband wouldnโ€™t mind if they engaged in sexual activities. Willford felt trapped in the car, as the driver had a clear plan for the evening.

Willford said she texted her husband and neighbor during the ride because she was scared the driver would act upon what he said.

When the driver stopped near her Adams County home, Willford said he blocked her from exiting the vehicle and pushed her back into the car.

Willford recounted the harrowing experience, expressing how agonizing it was to be so near her home, family, and safety yet facing assault in such proximity. After managing to push her way out of the car, she sought refuge at a neighborโ€™s house, hiding in their backyard until it was safe to return home.

Willford reported what happened to the Northglenn Police Department and Lyft.

The lawsuit alleges Lyft responded by telling Willford she would not be matched with that driver again and refunding her $85.53 fair.

โ€œAs my case has been investigated, Iโ€™ve learned that the driver was using someone elseโ€™s profile and wasnโ€™t even the driver presented to me by the Lyft app,โ€ said Willford.

Itโ€™s a practice Willfordโ€™s attorney, Morgan Carroll, called account renting.

โ€œThe issue of account renting, if youโ€™re not familiar with the term, is one person will go through and create a legitimate account, pass a background check and often make money on the side or give a password to a friend,โ€ said Carroll. โ€œAnd now we have a stream of people with access to the Lyft accounts who have not passed a background check and are not a qualified driver in the state of Colorado using the app.โ€

According to Lyftโ€™s policies, drivers are not allowed to let other people use their accounts. In a written statement, a spokesperson for Lyft said impersonating a driver โ€œcan and does lead to a permanent ban from the platform.โ€

The statement from Lyft continued to say safety is fundamental to the company, and the company takes reports of sexual assault โ€œvery seriously.โ€ When such incidents are reported, Lyft said it works with local law enforcement so appropriate actions can be taken.

A Lyft spokesperson said the company does not comment on issues directly related to ongoing litigation. The company has a safety response team, a partnership with ADT to assist with emergencies, and is โ€œworking with leading national organizationsโ€ to inform their safety policies, according to the spokesperson.

The lawsuit claims the problem of fake rideshare accounts or sharing an account is difficult to quantify but โ€œreports suggest the issue is significant with estimates including thousands of fraudulent accounts being created every month.โ€

Carroll does not believe Lyft has done enough to combat account renting.

โ€œLyft has also known about the systemic problem of imposter and fake accounts and has failed to address this systemic problem,โ€ said Carroll. โ€œMost disturbing out of the failure to address this issue is it is usually exactly because a person cannot pass a background check that theyโ€™re using these imposter or rented accounts in order to pick people up for money.โ€
