A 72-year-old Pensacola man was arrested Thursday morning for stabbing his ex-wife’s new husband.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said that Gregory Grant was charged with attempted homicide, WEAR reported.
The victim, identified as Alan Bingham, told the station that Grant is homeless and has been living at the home he shares with Grant’s ex-wife.
After being discharged from the hospital, Bingham shared that the individual had isolated himself in his room. Despite Bingham’s attempts to coax him out, the individual became hostile and expressed a desire to have no association. Bingham recounted, “I simply wanted to offer assistance.”
Unbeknownst to Bingham, the individual wielded a knife during the confrontation. Bingham felt the blade against his side, followed by a failed attempt to stab him again, resulting in a cut on Bingham’s thumb as he defended himself. Managing to restrain the individual’s arms, Bingham used his foot to trip him, enabling him to escape and contact emergency services as the individual barricaded himself in the room.
Police arrived and took Grant into custody. He’s being held without bond pending arraignment.
“I’m just trying to be a nice guy and help a homeless person out — and that’s the appreciation I get,” Bingham said.
No further information was released.
