Retired Reserve Deputy Fatally Shot, His Son Arrested on Weapons and Protective Order Violation Charges

A retired reserve deputy from Kentucky was discovered dead on Wednesday due to a gunshot wound. His son is currently in custody in connection with the incident but has not yet been formally charged.

John McQuillen, aged 65, had served at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for over a decade before retiring in 2021, according to a report by WAVE. Shortly after his body was found, law enforcement officers from the Louisville Metro Police detained 43-year-old Brandon McQuillen. They stated that he was present in the vicinity of the crime scene and had an AR-15 in his possession.

The younger McQuillen has been accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm and of violating an emergency protective order or domestic violence order. Although the arrest citation confirms his relationship to John McQuillen as his son, it does not specify if his apprehension is linked to his father’s tragic demise.

Court records, however, say that John McQuillen was granted an EPO against his son in 2018, according to WHAS. Last year, the son took out an EPO against his father.

Outside the apartment complex where John McQuillen’s body was found, investigators also found a suspicious package that was detonated by the bomb squad.

Brandon McQuillen was ordered held on a $10,000 bond on Thursday with a return court date of March 21.

Brandon McQuillen was arrested in 2020 when he allegedly chained a woman to the ceiling inside a home after she told him she didn’t want to see him anymore, according to WAVE. The arrest report says he put a chain around her neck and padlocked it to the ceiling, used a taser on her, beat her with a pool cue, and punched her in the face.

McQuillen’s former roommate called police, and he fled the scene. He was charged with unlawful imprisonment, assault, receiving stolen property, two EPO violations, and distributing porn. He was allowed to plead guilty to much lesser charges and was sentenced to three years in jail.
