A search warrant indicated that the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, who were found dead at their New Mexico home on Wednesday, are suspicious.
Gene Hackman, aged 95, and pianist Betsy Arakawa, aged 63, were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, alongside their pet dog. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office stated that foul play is not suspected in their deaths. Detective Roy Arndt mentioned that there were no clear signs of a gas leak.
Arndt revealed that Arakawa was discovered on the bathroom floor, where pills were scattered on the counter. Hackman was found in the mud room with his sunglasses nearby, according to reports by Variety.
The couple’s dog was found deceased in a bathroom closet. It was noted that the front door was open, but there were no signs of a break-in.
Investigators said it appears Hackman and Arakawa had been dead for some time. They also suggested the pair fell suddenly, as evidenced by a space heater next to Arakawa’s head and the sunglasses next to Hackman’s body, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican.
Two men performing maintenance work at the home discovered the bodies. They said they last made contact with the couple two weeks earlier.
