A California man and his girlfriend have been arrested in connection with the murder of his 97-year-old grandmother last week.
A concerned neighbor reached out to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office last Friday to request a welfare check on an elderly woman who had not been seen in a while. Upon arriving at the woman’s residence, deputies were met by the grandson, 40-year-old Brian Wiggins, and his girlfriend, 31-year-old Dozsha Beckwith.
Wiggins told them that his grandmother had left in an Uber to visit his father at an assisted living facility.
Upon entering the house, the deputies observed signs of a possible break-in, with the house appearing to have been ransacked, safes broken into, and a section of carpet missing. Suspecting foul play, the deputies decided to detain Wiggins and Beckwith for further questioning as they carried on with their investigation.
After a thorough search, the deputies made a grim discovery – the lifeless body of the grandmother was found in the trunk of a vehicle registered to Wiggins, which had been parked in the garage all along.
Investigators say they believe Wiggins and Beckwith forced their way into the home at some point, looking for a place stay. The grandmother objected and told them to leave, so Wiggins beat her to death.
He has been charged with murder, and Beckwith is charged with burglary and accessory after the fact. They are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
The county coroner’s office will release the victim’s identity, the sheriff’s office said.
