Do you have to go to court in Florida if you drive past a school bus?

Is it a mandatory court appearance in Florida if you pass a school bus?

ORLANDO, Fla. – Lauren M. asked, “Someone told me it’s a mandatory court appearance if you pass a school bus. Is that true?”

The brief answer? Almost! Nevertheless, let’s face it — irrespective of the legal repercussions, there is never a valid excuse for overtaking a school bus when it is stationary with its lights flashing.

It’s a common sight — impatient motorists viewing school buses as a hindrance. Yet, in all driving scenarios where exercising patience is crucial, this is the one where you must suppress your ego the most. Children are embarking and disembarking from that bus, and one thoughtless maneuver could result in devastating outcomes.

Surprisingly, Florida legislation had to explicitly outline the specific penalties for drivers who overtake a school bus on the side where kids are getting on and off.

Let’s be clear: Passing a stopped school bus illegally always comes with a fine.

But if you pass on the side where children enter and exit, you’re looking at a mandatory court appearance and a very steep fine.

While this situation isn’t super common, just imagine how reckless it is. There’s zero justification for putting young lives in danger.

Bottom line? Just don’t do it.

Whether it’s a mandatory court appearance, passing a stopped school bus is one of the most dangerous (and selfish) driving decisions you can make. Slow down, be patient, and follow the law. Those extra few minutes aren’t worth a ticket — or worse, a tragedy.
