Hilaria Baldwin states her changing Spanish accent is because of a medical issue

Hilaria Baldwin explained that her often fluctuating Spanish accent is due to ADHD and dyslexia.

The 41-year-old model admitted that her ‘brain just works differently’ in her new memoir, Manual Not Included.

‘My speech, reading, listening, focus, memory, and self-confidence are greatly impacted by these [diagnoses],’ she penned in a snippet obtained by Page Six.

In her new memoir, she also addressed the drama surrounding how she identifies as Spanish even though she was born and raised in Boston. 

The yoga teacher, who delved into turbulent moments in her relationship with actor Alec Baldwin, 67, in her publication, linked her altered accent to her neurodivergence.

She pointed to her Today show stint in 2015, where she appeared to struggle with saying ‘cucumber’ in English, attributing it to her ‘processing variances.’

She said she did not discuss ‘any of this publicly’ until her book. 

‘I have a brain that is one part English, one part Spanish, seven dollops of mom brain, and a heavy pour of distraction,’ she wrote. 

‘If only you knew how loud it is in my brain at any given moment,’ she continued.

‘I just existed in a land where sometimes I spoke one language and sometimes I spoke another, sometimes I mixed them and got mixed up, and I never talked about my processing differences.’ 

She later added about how her brain ‘works differently,’ writing: ‘I can really succeed in the right environments and tasks.’

Back in 2020, Baldwin, née Hilary Hayward-Thomas, was exposed for not having been born in Mallorca, Spain as she previously claimed. 

At the time, she responded to the controversies by saying that she was a ‘different kind of Bostonian’ because she had ‘spent some of her childhood in Spain.’ 

Her parents only moved to Mallorca from Boston in 2011 when she was 27.

Reflecting on the controversy around her public persona, she is doubling down on her claims of Spanish identity and blames the drama on a ‘coordinated mob’ who are ‘taking her voice.’ 

Insisting her Spanish accent is real and ‘normal,’ she also said her ‘cancellation’ had an undertone of sexism.

‘I started to really unravel,’ she wrote about how being accused of faking her accent had harmed her mental health. 

‘I was confused. I felt lost. I missed my family. I couldn’t eat. I got very thin. I started to question my sanity. I started to question if I was a good person.’

She recalled: ‘I returned to what I used to do as a child, and started to call myself stupid. When I woke up, I wanted to be dead. And I got worse and worse and worse.’ 

She said that she got through the ‘cancellation’ with her husband’s help. 

The yoga instructor — who also wrote about ‘rocky times’ in her marriage to actor Alec Baldwin, 67, in her book — attributed her accent to being neurodivergent. ‘Alec was so good to me throughout this time,’ she wrote in her book. 

‘He had experienced similar situations: people saying awful things about him, trying to destroy him, making others think he was a bad person. He could reach out from a place of real empathy and personal experience.’ 

She married the Rust actor in 2012 and they share seven children: Carmen, 11, Rafael, nine, Leonardo, eight, Romeo, six, Eduardo, four, Marilu, four, and Ilaria, two. 

The 30 Rock alum also has 29-year-old daughter Ireland from his past relationship with ex-wife Kim Basinger.
