The M1 has been shut in both directions after a lorry burst into a ball of flames near Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue rushed to the scene shortly after 8.51pm tonight (Monday, December 18). The blaze erupted between junction 32 and junction 31.

National Highways released images of the fire and have issued several statements on X, formerly Twitter, while firefighters tackle the blaze and traffic is halted.

National Highways’ latest update said: “The M1 in SouthYorkshire is now CLOSED in both directions between J32 (M18) and J31 (Aston) due to a lorry fire. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue remain on scene working to tackle the blaze.”

Traffic data site Inrix said: “M1 in both directions closed, stationary traffic due to lorry fire from J32 M18 to J31 A57 Worksop Road (Sheffield / Worksop).”
