Canada's VERY woke new First Family: So much for the end of the lefty Trudeau era, PM Mark Carney is supported by his eco warrior wife, vegan cook daughter and non-binary child who championed Bernie Sanders

When Justin Trudeau resigned just days before Donald Trump began his second term, it followed years of dissatisfaction with the Liberal Party. The party had lost favor due to various issues, such as the rising costs of food and housing in the country.

The exit of the politician nicknamed the ‘Prince of Woke’ by his opponents seemed to indicate a shift towards more conservative views, hinting at a potential win for ‘Blue Tory’ Pierre Poilievre.

However, under the leadership of former Goldman Sachs VIP Mark Carney, the ruling Party staged a successful comeback. They promised practical solutions and committed to maintaining the country’s economic growth.

But an anti-Trudeau, he is not – as Canada’s new Prime Minister is, much like his predecessor, known for his tough-on-Trump stance and passionate climate activism.

And ex-banker Mark’s liberal politics are sure to be shaped by his wife and children – who themselves have been vocal on issues around sustainability, housing and healthy food.

The 59-year-old, who has served as Governor of the Bank of England but never held public office, enjoyed a whopping victory for his party on Monday – with his wife and youngest daughter throwing themselves headfirst into the campaign.

‘Diana, our family: without your support, I wouldn’t be standing here,’ Mark wrote in an emotional social post in March.

‘Without your examples, I wouldn’t have a purpose. Without your love, I wouldn’t have the strength for what lies ahead.’

While his other kids have stayed largely out of the spotlight, the family penchant for politics is clear, as many have made their own marks in the world by attending world class universities – two of them Ivy Leagues – and campaigning for a myriad of causes.

Diana Fox – who he has been married to for 31 years – after Mark’s victory thanked Canada for ‘choosing her husband’s vision’ as she praised his ‘consistent, compassionate, loyal and driven by an exceptionally strong set of values’.

The British mother-of-four – who met Mark while they were both studying at Oxford University – is in her own right a leading economist who specialises in studying developing nations.

Her own climate change activism has also been a cornerstone of her career and in 2021, she was hired by Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy, to advise them on global climate and energy policy.

Diana’s father Christopher Fox – a wealthy English pig farmer – has also spoken of his daughter’s strong moral stances

Fox previously told the Daily Mail that Diana was ‘something of an eco-warrior,’ adding that she ‘doesn’t like waste and never has.’

In an interview with the Ottawa Lookout, she said her and Mark bonded over their shared love of hockey while at uni – and the rest was history.

The couple went on to have highly successful careers – Diana had powerful roles in policy while Mark worked at Goldman Sachs, the Bank of Canada and the Department of Finance Canada.

In 2013, however, the family made the move to Diana’s homeland when Mark became Governor of the Bank of England.

‘I was surprised we went to the UK. I thought we’d never go because he always said it had to be Canada,’ she said.

What was less shocking was his pivot to run for Prime Minister.

‘He always had a deep yearning for public service,’ he said. ‘He’s got this focus for making things better for the country… He always comes back.’

And it would seem their four children are equally as drawn to activism as their parents.

Their youngest Cleo – a freshman at Harvard University – introduced her father before he gave his first speech as prime-minister designate on March 9, 2025.

She also recorded an ad for her father, where she proclaimed that he ‘will make big polluters do more to fight climate change’ and that ‘he’s really good in a crisis’.

Like her mother and father, Cleo has centered environmentalism in her political outlook – and has been outspoken about the cause on social media.

She is a board member with the Bluedot Institute, the climate-focused nonprofit Bluedot Institute, and has produced articles, videos and even recipes to help people live more sustainable lives.

As part of her work with Bluedot, she spent two weeks at its exclusive internship on Martha’s Vineyard, the ritzy island where the Obamas and other A-list celebrities have multimillion-dollar mansions.

She is also a leader at Harvard’s Resource Efficiency Program, where she pursues initiatives to reduce waste and energy consumption.

Cleo also has a taste for the finer things in life, as she was seen rubbing shoulders with celebrities in the royal box at Wimbledon – London’s prestigious tennis grand slam event – in the summer of 2024.

No stranger to the camera, Cleo has also boasted her own cooking show on Bluedot’s YouTube channel, dubbed ‘Cleo’s Clean Cooking.’

There, Mark’s youngest daughter often shows off her healthy lifestyle – featuring her recipes for seeded crackers with avocado, gluten free and vegan chocolate chip cookies, and flourless brownies made with Greek yoghurt.

Cleo’s siblings have a less public profile than she does – but have still made their mark.

Not much is known about Tess, but Amelia is a recent graduate from Edinburgh University in Scotland, with a photo from the graduation shared on X over the summer.

Elsewhere Sasha, 24, who uses they/them pronouns, graduated cum laude from Yale University. They are understood to currently work as a freelance writer and reviewer in Brooklyn, New York.

While Sasha didn’t join their father on the campaign trail, they have been open about supporting a number of issues online, including fundraising for commissary payments for incarcerated people.

In a Facebook post from March 2020, they hit out at Yale for maintaining an A-F grading scale despite COVID-19 being ‘a worldwide crisis.’

‘I have the huge privilege of my own room/workspace in a high-income household with a stable Wi-Fi connection. Many of my classmates and friends don’t have those privileges, & yet Yale still expects them to carry on with classes ‘as close to normal as possible’ and receive grading on an ordinary A-F scale, as though this isn’t a worldwide crisis,’ they said.

‘Even with all the advantages I have, I’m a mentally ill international student who is now taking night classes due to time zones, leaving me with completely empty days stuck inside during which the progress I’ve made on my mental health will undoubtedly deteriorate.

‘My group therapy has been cancelled, my therapist is only accessible through a biweekly phone call, and my access to medication has been delayed since Yale has no coherent pharmaceutical plan for international students.

‘Throughout this, I’m expected to carry on with ‘classes as usual’ and keep up the course load  did on-campus. Funny joke! Universal pass is the only equitable option.’

Sasha has also previously endorsed left-wing Bernie Sanders in the US 2020 election.

They graduated from Yale in 2023, with a Major in WGSS (Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) and English (Creative Writing concentration) and were a 2022 Yale Farm Summer intern.

According to the University’s site, their interest in farming and cooking was ‘informed by their maternal family’s practices of farming pigs, bees, and various vegetables in Southeast England’.

‘As a fiction writer in Yale’s creative writing concentration, they are fascinated by how people write both critically and creatively about food, agriculture, and sustainability,’ it read.

‘Sasha’s 2022 Summer Intern independent project took the form of a short story centred around a field trip to an Ottawa Valley sugar shack (cabane à sucre) which examines the intersections of nationalism, colonialism, sex, and power in Canada’s maple sugar industry.’

There, they made hard work of weeding beds and prepping pizza dough, as well as serving up ‘comfort food at the Silliman Buttery’.

After his historic win last night, Mike warned that Donald Trump is ‘trying to break us so that America can own us’ in his victory speech.

The Liberal Party is projected to continue to rule Canada after being declared winner of Monday’s elections, though it is unclear if it will be a minority or majority government.

In a speech in Ottawa in the late hours after his victory was secured, he took dead aim at the POTUS with a dark premonition, claiming to be preparing ‘for the worst.’

‘As I’ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our water, our resources, our country… never,’ he promised.

Mark said these were not ‘idle threats,’ adding: ‘President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us.’

‘That will never, ever happen. But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed,’ he said to applause.

Carney promised, still, to meet with Trump despite ‘a crisis that we did not create’ and promised to ‘win this trade war with America.’

‘When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss the future economic and strategic relationship between two sovereign nations and it will be with full knowledge that we have many other options to build prosperity for all Canadians.’

However, he warned: ‘Our old relationship of integration with the U.S. is now over. These are tragedies but it’s also our new reality. We are over the shock of the American betrayal, we have to take care of each other.’

‘We will strengthen our relationship with reliable partners in Europe and Asia and elsewhere in the world and if the U.S. doesn’t want to play a pivotal in the world economy, we will lead, not the Americans.’

Trump has yet to weigh in on the result.
