Shopkeeper Richard Roebuck describes the view from his shop doorway as ‘amazing’.

“It’s a dream to be able to look out of the window and see Castle Hill,” he says from his gift shop Roebuck Home and Garden, which he opened in September. Florists Poppy’s Flowers next door is run by his friend, Debs Scott, and her daughter Hanna Wise.

Richard and Debs’ shops are side by side on Ruth Street, Newsome, which has a clear view across the busy Newsome crossroads and over towards Victoria Tower, the Huddersfield landmark perched atop Castle Hill. Look the other way and you might catch a glimpse of traffic on the M62.

Richard likes Newsome a lot – he lives just up the road – and says locals have been very supportive of his new business, even if the weather hasn’t been great in recent weeks. “People have been really kind. But when it’s raining people in Newsome don’t go shopping. It’s not easy but we are managing.”

His parents, and grandparents, were Newsomers who were well aware that its elevated position often meant poorer weather. “They would say that Newsome crossroads, by the church, was the snowline.”

Years ago, his shop was the Co-op, with the butchers next door. During renovations they uncovered green glazed tiles dating back decades. Visitors can now see these glimpses into the past in all their glory as they have been framed with wood.

Debs, from Halifax, says Newsome is a ‘really busy place’ with lots of lovely people. “They are very chatty in Newsome and the shopkeepers are great. There are some nice shops; the village store, Hadfields, the barbers, and the fish and chip shop.”

Nancy Shaw, 81, who has lived in Newsome for over 50 years, says locals have all the shops they need within walking distance. A quirk of the village is that pubs, The Clarence and the Fountain, are next door to one another in Towngate. And both are busy says Nancy.

“We’ve got everything we need,” says adds. “You can see Castle Hill from here which is beautiful. The other way you can see the M62. Wherever you live in Newsome you are only five minutes walk to the countryside.”

Nancy, a former mender who worked at Joseph Hoyle’s woollen mill in Longwood, describes Newsome as a ‘nice little village’ although she says there are one or two ‘idiot kids’ who cause mischief because they have nothing else to occupy them.

“People are nice and friendly. I like it here and would not want to live anywhere else.”

A young man, who asked not to be named, said he lived down the road in Primrose Hill which he claimed wasn’t a great place to live due to anti-social and criminal behaviour.

He said Whitehead Lane, Primrose Hill, had its fair share of problems. “There are a lot of trouble causers, usually at night time. There’s a lot of noise and you get frustrated and sick of seeing police. There’s all sorts – break ins, drugs. There’s a lot of drug issues.”

Despite his misgivings, he said most people were pleasant and got on well. A 64-year-old Newsomer, who did not want to be named, said the local Scout group and a village rugby club were both vital parts of the community.

Stephen Werney, 66, described Newsome simply as ‘home’, and added: “It’s the same as it’s always been. I have good enough neighbours. What more can you say? There must be something about it because I have lived here most of my life.”

Karina said the church had become a community centre which was good to see. And she said Newsome was the kind of place that people were happy to stay and not move away.

“There are people that I used to babysit who are still around. I have known a lot of people for a long time.”
