Bryan Kohberger: University of Idaho Murder Text Messages, 911 Call Released in Unsealed Court Docs

Idaho news agencies recently acquired the recording of the 911 call made by the surviving roommates of the University of Idaho murders on November 13, 2022, just days after transcripts were made public.

The victims, Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves, were discovered stabbed to death on that fateful morning. The two surviving roommates had called their friends over following a troubling night during which one of them claimed to have seen a ski mask-wearing man in the house. After texting their roommates and getting no response, they realized that something was seriously amiss just before noon.

Last week, transcripts of the 911 calls and the text exchanges between the surviving roommates were released following the unsealing of previously closed motions by the court, as reported by CrimeOnline. On Friday, media outlets finally obtained the recordings they had long been pursuing.

The chaos and fear is palpable in the recording as the dispatcher tries to get information, while the roommates pass the phone around, sometimes to the frustration of the dispatcher.

The call ends when Moscow Police officers arrive on the scene.

Bryan Kohberger, a graduate student at nearby Washington State University, was ultimately arrested and charged with the crimes. He was taken into custody at his parents home in Pennsylvania, where he had gone for the Christmas holiday, and extradited to Idaho to stand trial.

His attorneys have used the 911 call as one of their many attempts to have the indictment against their client tossed out, claiming that it should not have been played for the grand jury. The judge overseeing the case dismissed that motion.

Kohberger’s trial is set to begin in August.
